1. What Was Studied?
This review examined how CBD (cannabidiol) — the non-intoxicating cannabinoid from the cannabis plant — interacts with cancer cells at a biological level. Specifically, it looked at the different ways CBD may trigger cancer cells to die, and whether those mechanisms are well-understood enough to support the development of CBD-based cancer treatments.
This is a scientific review paper, meaning it pulled together a large body of existing laboratory research rather than running a single new experiment.
2. What Did They Find?
CBD appears to trigger cancer cell death through multiple biological pathways simultaneously — not just one single mechanism
It causes oxidative stress inside cancer cells, disrupts their energy production (mitochondria), and activates internal "self-destruct" signals
Importantly, CBD appears to do this with relatively low toxicity toward normal, healthy cells — suggesting a degree of selectivity
These effects have been observed across multiple cancer types in lab models
However, challenges remain: CBD is poorly absorbed when taken orally, its behaviour in the body varies significantly between individuals, and the ideal dose for any anti-cancer effect is unknown

3. What This Means
This review adds to a growing body of lab evidence that CBD can interfere with cancer cell survival in meaningful ways. The fact that it appears to affect multiple pathways at once — rather than one single target — is scientifically interesting, because cancer cells often find ways to work around single-pathway treatments.
The selectivity finding is also notable: a compound that disrupts cancer cells while leaving healthy cells relatively intact is exactly what oncology researchers look for.
That said, the gap between lab results and human treatment remains significant. What works on isolated cancer cells in a dish does not automatically translate to what works in a living human body.
