Oil vs Capsules vs Gummies — Simply Explained
For people who don't want to inhale cannabis, three formats dominate: oils, capsules, and gummies. They're all consumed orally. They all take longer to kick in than inhaled cannabis. But they're meaningfully different from each other — and choosing the right one can make a significant difference in your experience.
Cannabis oils
Cannabis oil (or tincture) comes in a bottle with a dropper. You place drops under your tongue, hold them briefly, then swallow. Oils can also be added to food or drinks.
Best for: People who want flexibility and control. You can adjust your dose in small increments, use it sublingually for faster onset, or add it to your evening tea.
Onset: 15–45 minutes (sublingual), 30–90 minutes (swallowed) Duration: 4–6 hours Precision: High — the dropper lets you measure carefully
Consideration: Some people find the taste of cannabis oil unpleasant. Many oils use MCT (coconut-derived) carrier oil. If you have a coconut allergy or sensitivity, check the label.
Capsules
Cannabis capsules are exactly what they sound like — a measured dose of cannabis oil in a shell, taken like a supplement. They're swallowed and processed through the digestive system.
Best for: People who want simplicity, consistency, and discretion. Capsules feel familiar to anyone who takes vitamins or medication regularly.
Onset: 30 minutes to 2 hours Duration: 4–8 hours Precision: High — every capsule contains a fixed dose
Consideration: Slower and less flexible than oils. You can't easily halve a capsule (though some are available in lower doses). What you take is what you take.
Gummies (and other edibles)
Gummies are the most popular cannabis edible format in Canada. They come in a wide range of doses, flavours, and cannabinoid ratios. Other edibles include chocolates, mints, and beverages.
Best for: People who want something enjoyable and portable. Gummies are easy to take, taste good, and are completely odourless.
Onset: 30 minutes to 2 hours Duration: 4–8 hours Precision: Moderate — Canadian regulations cap recreational edibles at 10mg THC per package, and doses are clearly labelled
Consideration: The experience of eating something sweet can make it easy to forget you're consuming cannabis. Set an intention before you take it, and put the package away afterward.
Mary Jane says: "Capsules are for the person who doesn't want to think about it. Oils are for the person who wants to think about everything. Gummies are for the person who wants a treat. All three are excellent — they just serve different personalities."
